The Team Grace (Troy) running team recently celebrated its five year anniversary. Back in February 2011, our first group run was held inside at Hobart Arena with 10 mostly novice runners. There were a few people missing from that first run, but every week through May, we had a solid group of 12-15 runners who surpassed their goals, and eventually completed the Flying Pig Half Marathon.
Now in our 6th year, we have dozens of active participants in various events and fundraising activities throughout the year. While we continue with some established traditions, like our annual spaghetti dinner fundraiser, many new traditions have been established such as the Father/Daughter Dance, and fielding multiple teams in the Market to Market Relay in September.
On the fundraising front, we were a partner charity for the Flying Pig Marathon again, and we reached our goal of raising $5,000. With the funds we raised, we supported Girls on the Run Dayton, Free To Run Foundation, and we have committed to sponsoring a treadmill in the new Dayton Children’s tower when it opens.
Athlete(s) of the Year
Another tradition is to recognize the contributions and accomplishments of one of our members each year. We had several very deserving individuals as always, since there are so many inspirational people on the team. The final decision came down to two individuals, so instead of just one, we are recognizing both runners, Akina and Lindsay.
In 2015, Akina ran several half marathons and a couple of marathons, including one weekend that consisted of a half on Saturday and a full on Sunday. She frequently attends the group runs on Wednesdays and Saturdays at Up and Running, participates in many of the ORRRC team series races, and two years in a row finished as the #2 female in the difficult Topo Trail Series.
Not to be outdone, Lindsay completed several 50k races, plus she ran her first 50 miler. Lindsay also participates in many of the team series races and ORRRC trail races. She also was a volunteer running buddy for Girls on the Run last fall, and helped to promote the Trails in Motion film tour in Dayton.
Congratulations Akina and Lindsay! We are fortunate to have you as teammates!
Our next post will be about our 2016 campaign and exciting plans for the future.
